Roles and Permissions in Zal.ai

What each role can see and do in Zal.ai

Zal.ai uses role-based permissions to control what each user can see and do. This article explains each role and why you may or may not see certain features.

This article is relevant to: All roles

The Four Roles

Employee

The standard user role. Employees can:

  • View and manage their own goals, brag sheet, and profile
  • Complete assigned review tasks (self assessments, peer reviews, upward reviews)
  • View published performance reviews
  • Participate in meetings and capture notes

Manager

In addition to Employee access, Managers can:

  • View team data via My Team's Goals, My Team's Feedback, and My Team's Appraisals
  • Approve goals submitted by direct reports
  • Create and schedule meetings
  • Add feedback about anyone in the company
  • Edit and submit AI-generated performance review drafts
  • Publish approved reviews to employees

HR

HR users have organization-wide visibility for oversight purposes:

  • View all employees' profiles, goals, and reviews
  • Access review cycles and calibration tools
  • Participate in calibration sessions
  • Exception: HR cannot see their own review data

Admin

Full system access including:

  • Everything HR can see, plus their own data
  • User management (add, edit, deactivate users)
  • System configuration (departments, grading scales, meeting types)
  • Review cycle creation and management

Why Can't I See "My Team's" Views?

If you're a manager but don't see My Team's Goals or My Team's Appraisals, check with your admin. Common causes include:

  • Your role hasn't been set to Manager in the system
  • Reporting lines haven't been configured (no one reports to you in Zal)

Visibility Quick Reference

Your own data: Always visible to you

Your team's data: Visible if you're their manager
